Is there scratches on your Nokia 5800 touchscreen?

April 27th, 2009

Well, I had posted earlier that few were developed few on my tube’s screen, I do not feel I am the only one facing the same. There are certainly many around the world concerned about damage on their touchscreen like me..

I have ordered for a screen guard from ebay for my tube, well Nokia should have given one bundled with the tube ;)

I looked at my web analytics tool, there are many people reached this blog by searching on Google with terms like

This clearly gives a proof of the worry and frustration on Nokia 5800 users..

What do you feel?

Airtel MChek not for Nokia 5800?

April 26th, 2009

MChek is a facility by which you can make payments via your mobile phones. MChek is tied up with Bharati Airtel to make the mobile payments easier. You can pay your postpaid mobile phone bills through MChek and recharge a prepaid mobile phone.

I was an MChek user from my Sony Ericsson K750i, I used MChek to recharge my mobile when I was on prepaid plan and ocaassionally to pay post paid bills when I migrated to postpaid.

I recently bought a Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic and tried getting Airtel MChek on it.. Surprising, I got a message saying

According to our records, your new mobile handset does not support the mChek on Airtel client application. Please contact customer support for more information. – mChek on Airtel

Its months back that Nokia 5800 is released, I think MChek and Airtel need to work on this soon as the Nokia 5800 users are going ;)

Touch screen scratch guard for nokia 5800

April 24th, 2009

I own a Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic ! Well there are things to be proud about owning this as well as some negatives. I faced the earpiece problem of Nokia 5800 which the initial lot of them had. Luckily it got fixed.

Then came scratches on my Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic’s touchscreen. I liked using the stylus provided by Nokia for my 5800 tube, but once scratches developed on my touchscreen, I went back to using just my fingers for everything on it. Stopped using handwriting recognition and adapted to using just the full qwerty keyboard using my fingers. Thanks to the different editing options provided.

I learnt that using a screen guard is must for these phones for using them for a considerable duration without damaging the screen. I researched on ebay to buy a good screen protector for my tube and finalized a clear screen protector for my Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic. Actually the seller sells two types of screen protectors – clear screen and mirror screen. Clear screen is the usual transparent thing, while mirror screen gives a flashy mirror like look when the phone is not in use (backlight is off). I chose the clearscreen one as it is cheap over the mirror one. It costed just 5$ (USD) for me for a set of 5 pieces. You can replace an old one with a new one as it get worn out, hence the extra pieces were bought. So hence just 1$ a piece.

The screenguard which I purchased is still in transit, so anxiously waiting for it and for using the stylus again !

By the way, if you have bought Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic, make sure to use a screenguard if you are planning to use the stylus. The stylus is soft, but when the phone is exposed to tiny dust particles, it gets stuck to the screen and when the stylus moves it pushes these particles and make tiny scratches on the screen. These scratches can be of any size depending on the pressure you apply on the screen. thats my experience. If your phone is new, try getting a screenguard before the screen get spoiled. These screenguards are easily removable, hence you can replace as they go bad.

Post your experience with Nokia 5800 Touchscreen here.

Secure your PC with Google Pack

April 23rd, 2009

I am running the free version of AVG Antivirus for almost three years now and so far never faced any major virus attacks on my system which needed a full cleanup with format and reistall of everything.. I am happy about it? Well have you?

I am sure many of you would have faced virus attacks, a friend of mine was not aware of a virus which was sending links to sites using his yahoo messenger untill I told him about it.. Its very common when you have an unsecured PC.

Whether your PC is connected to internet or not, you will need a good antivirus and antispyware. Your friend may connect his USB stick (pen drive) when he visits your home to share some snaps, which you cant resist, even your friend might not be aware, he is spreading viruses from his USB stcik/CD/DVD ROM.

This is where things like AVG antivirus and Google Pack can help you.

Google Pack is a collection of useful software for your system along with an antispyware and an antivirus. Currently Google pack is bundled with Google Chrome Web Browser, Google Apps, Norton Security Scan, Google Desktop, Google Photos Screensaver, Firefox with Google Toolbar, Skype, Google Earth, Google Toolbar for IE, Spyware Doctor, Picasa, Adobe Reader, Google Talk and Realplayer. In fact you can choose the ones you need to install and there is no need to download all, if you have few of them already.

Google Pack contains evaluation versions of PCTools Spyware Doctor and Norton Security Scan, which are good enough on a home PC. If you can, you may optionally upgrade to their full versions for enhanced protections.

I never had an antispyware in my system untill I downloaded Google Pack. I realised that even my system had many spyware infections :( . As I had AVG Antivirus home edition, I was clean in the virus section.

I would suggest readers to make use of these trustable free products for a safer PC and internet usage. This really doesn’t cost anything but hours of your time cleaning up your system on a virus attack.

How many visitors your website/blog gets?

April 22nd, 2009

Earlier I posted how to start a website or blog of yours.

You obviously make a website or blog for others to see it, hence you would be anxious to know how many visitors your website or blog is receiving.

Web Analytics

You may go through an introduction to web analytics to get some fundamental idea behind web visitor tracking.

We usually track website visitors using third party web analytics solutions – for example in this blog, I have used StatCounter and Google Analytics. Both uses JavaScript based data capture technique. You may go reading in detail about them at how web analytics data collection happens, but for you, implementing this is very simple – Just copy-paste the JavaScript code snippet provided by these vendors into each page of your website. You are done, you can see reports on respective vendor websites.

Leaving a website without being tracked is the biggest crime you can do after launching your website ! Firstly you will not have any clue whether are there any vistors or what they do on your website.

Google Analytics and StatCounter are just two of such providers, in fact these two provide the service for FREE! So there is no reason for you for not trying them !

So, now will you tell me how many visitors your website/blog got ?

Official GMail Mobile Client for Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic 'Tube'!

April 21st, 2009

I had earlier posted list of Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic Tube Apps few days back. Those are the ones I am using on my tube.

In the same list I had mentioned about the GMail for Mobile app which is being used in my Nokia 5800. ‘Gmail for Mobile’ is a Java based gmail client in nokia 5800 provided by Google. Well this post says ‘Official GMail Mobile for Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic ‘Tube”, dont take me wrong, GMail for Mobile do not have a specific version for Nokia 5800, instead the one available (version 2.0.6 when I write this post) is compatible with Nokia 5800 tube as well!

Following is the snapshot of my login screen I posted earlier, but had mentioned that it is not properly a fit for Nokia 5800 since it had the gaming control buttons on GMail for Mobile screen and it was seeming as if this app is not exactly suitable for Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic.

Well I was too early into my conclusions, which I would like to correct here. Following is the snapshot of same app without those ugly looking buttons. Isn’t it looking better?
gmail-mobile-nokia-5800-tube

GMail for Mobile is available for download at http://m.google.com/mail, when you open this link on your mobile browser. Open this link on your Nokia 5800’s own browser, download and install the app.

Once you install the app, go to Settings > Application Manager > Installed App. On the list of applications, locate GMail for Mobile you just installed. Highlight it (select by touching with your finger once), then on the Options menu, open ‘Suite Settings’. This opens a list of application settings for the app on your ‘Tube’. Switch off ‘On-screen keyboard’, to remove those buttons as in my first snap from the application screen.

Now start GMail for Mobile app, you will get a full screen view of the application. You can further customize the app by opening settings inside the application. Select larger fonts for a better menu and readability.

Host your emails using Google Apps

April 20th, 2009

If you own a domain name, and do provide email accounts to few people, you would have faced issues with mail box size limit on these accounts at least once.

Mail accounts added to your hosting account uses portion of your web hosting disk space, hence often pose a headache to you and you may even get alerts from your webhost informing about the high disk space usage alerts.

Google has provided a very good solution to this problem – Google Apps.

Google currently provide two variants of this service – standard and premium. Standard version of Google apps is free while premium version is priced but obviously with some value additions to the product.

For using Google apps for email, you need to point your domain name’s MX entry to Google’s servers. By default your MX entry will be pointed to your existing host’s nameservers which need to be changed. Once this process is done, you can send receive mails from your email ids managed from the Google Apps.

You can have email ids like you@yourdomain.com , bust still use features of GMail along with other features of Google such as Calendar, Docs, notebook etc.

So are you the one with a 5MB mail account at your domain name? Isn’t it the time to change it to a 6GB mail account?

Plugins I use on this blog !

April 19th, 2009

As you may know, this blog is running on self hosted wordpress. Wordpress do have a hosted solution as well as one like this, you may read this post to know more.

Wordpress has plugin support. You can attach functionalities to your blog without even touching the core code files ! Yes, thats through plugins. Check out wordpress plugin directory to see what are the functionality additions available.

I am currently using following plugins in this blog.

  • Askimet: A must for a blog like this. It prevents comment spam. You need an API key to activate this plugin, which is available at wordpress.com.
  • Google-analytics-for-wordpress: You can add Google analytics code by directly editing your theme files. This poses a risk of no data being captured when you change the theme and forget to add code to the new theme. Solution is to use this plugin, which adds analytics code on your pages automatically – Yes, no code editing and pasting analytics code is required each time you change theme.
  • Lightbox-2-wordpress-plugin: Lightbox.js is a JavaScript framework to display images and web pages within overlays. You can see lightbox in action on the post – public/private key authentication with PuTTY on fedora 10. View those snapshots by clicking on them, it opens in a layer on the same window rather than opening as a new page !
  • official-statcounter-plugin-for-wordpress: This is another plugin similar to the Google analytics plugin mentioned above, only differene being, it embeds statcounter tracking codes on pages automatically. Statcounter is the first web analytics tool I have used and still using. It is cool !
  • wordpress-mobile-edition: This website has a mobile friendly version too ! This feature is achieved by using this plugin as well as a different theme compatible for mobile browsers.
  • wp-contact-form: I am using this on my contact page. You need not code a contact form and the server sided script to handle the form yourself. This plugin can do the job.
  • FeedBurner_FeedSmith_Plugin: This is to use feedburner as my default feed manager than the one built in in wordpress. This plugin automatically redirects visitors to the built-in feed url to the feedburner feed url.
  • youtubebrackets: This is one of the plugins I have used a lot in my other blogs. This helps us embed youtube videos on wordpress posts.

I am sure this will not be an exclusive list as days pass. I might be adding some more cool plugins on this blog. I will update this post as and when a new plugin is added.

how to open zip file in nokia 5800

April 18th, 2009

Well, I saw someone asking this question somewhere, so this post !

On the main menu on Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic, you might have seen a section called ‘Download’, This section is provided by Nokia to share useful softwares which can be used in the host mobile phone.

Following is a snapshot of the Nokia 5800 main menu, this screenshot is taken by using ScreenSnap.

nokia-5800-main-menu

On exploring the download section (You would need an internet connection to use the ‘Download’. If your mobile service provider has provided this option, its fine, else use the wifi option on the phone to connect to your home wireless network), one can find useful downloads such as applications, images, videos etc.

nokai-5800-tube-downloads

Go to the application section (your phone will take few minutes to refresh content from internet, this is normal, leave the phone to refresh content), you can see something like below.

download-applications-nokia-5800-xpressmusic

Install the Zip application as well as other ones you need. You can now open zip files on your Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic. When you try to open any zip file, this application will do the job of extracting and opening zip file contents in your Nokia 5800 tube !

[UPDATE]

The above post was made when Nokia OVI was not released. After Nokia OVI was released, what you could find under downloads was just the Nokia OVI application.

Do not panic, just download Nokia OVI application, you may be required to create a new OVI account if you do not have one. After installing the app, start the app and search for the Zip application mentioned above. Install the Zip application from OVI, and that’s it you should be able to open zip files in your Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic.
